  • Expensive

When we first came across the specs for the Strix Scar 16 from ASUS, we had to double check that they were actually right. This insane portable machine allows you to take the power of a seriously powerful gaming rig wherever you go, and it’s hands-down the best ASUS gaming laptop on the market right now.

To start with, it has the Intel Core-i9 13980HX processor, which is a Raptor Lake chip with 24 cores and 32 threads. It runs at a base clock frequency of 2.2GHz, but can boost by more than 250% to 5.6 GHz under pressure, which is an absolutely insane jump in performance.

Plus, the Scar 16 comes with the RTX 4090, which is essentially one of the most powerful GPUs on the market right now. With 24GB of GDDR6X memory, a bandwidth limit of over 1,008 GB/second, and some competent ray tracing compatibility (with 128 dedicated RT cores), this is a graphics card that can play all of the recent AAA titles on max settings.

The laptop itself is very well designed, combining straight edges with some very creative lighting, plus semi-transluscent keyboard deck. There’s also a dot matrix design on the chassis, providing an interesting textured approach.

And we’ve not even mentioned the display, yet! The Nebula HDR technology used provides an incredible display panel, and features mini LEDs with up to 1100 nits brightness, as well as 1024 dimming zones.

This is such an incredible computer, and one that we’d definitely recommend to anyone in the market for the ultimate gaming laptop. ASUS are known for providing quality products, but this one absolutely blows away the competition and we highly recommend it.

Best budget ASUS gaming laptop – ASUS TUF Dash 15

GPU

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

CPU

i7-12650H

Pros
  • Excellent budget option
  • 144hz refresh rate
  • Quality design
Cons
  • Less powerful GPU

Next up is the ASUS TUF Dash 15, a fantastic little PC that we’d say is a worthy contender for one of the best budget gaming laptops around. With an i7 processor, RTX 3070, and a PCIe SSD, this is a fantastic unit and will still do a very good job of playing today’s AAA titles.

The CPU here is the i7-12650H, a 10 core chip which runs at a base frequency of 2.3GHz. Speaking of impressive boost speeds, this is another chip which impresses, as it can more than double its frequency under pressure (reaching a maximum of 4.7GHz). It also supports DDR4 and DDR5 memory, meaning it’s likely to be future-proofed for some time.

Of course, no gaming laptop would be impressive without a decent GPU, and that’s where the NVidia RTX 3070 comes in. Although it’s slightly older, the fact that you can get it included in a laptop in this price range is pretty impressive.

With 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and a base clock frequency of 1,500MHz (boostable to 1,725 MHz), this is a GPU that provides more than enough juice to play titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. It also has some raytracing capabilities, too, if you want to really get the best bang for your buck.

Physically, this has a much more subdued design, and it is in fact a bit more of a mature-looking laptop. Straight edges compliment a matte black finish, and the only feature that really gives it a way as a gaming laptop is the inverted WASD key colours.

Although it might not have the most juice in the tank, this is still a killer little laptop that’s going to let you take a very impressive Steam library on the road; many of those titles are also going to run at 60FPS at Ultra settings, here, so it’s definitely a budget gaming laptop worthy of consideration.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070

CPU

Ryzen 9 7845HX

Pros
  • Powerful hardware
  • QHD resolution
Cons
  • HD camera could be better
  • Limited battery

If you’re more interested in a gaming laptop with a Ryzen chip, the Strix 17 is a high-performance machine that will work exceptionally well for eSports titles.

The CPU used here is the AMD Ryzen 9-78945HX, which is a power-efficient chip that runs at a steady base frequency of 3GHz. This will be enough to play games like Rocket League and CS:GO, but it can also turbo up to 5.2GHz if it really needs to, providing more than enough spare performance to ensure you can keep framerates buttery smooth.

The GPU is the RTX 4070 from Nvidia, a 12GB GDDR6X graphics card with some serious juice. It operates at a base frequency of 1,920MHz, but can boost to 2,475 MHz under pressure, and has a memory bandwidth limit of 504.2 GB/s. That’s pretty nuts for a mobile GPU!

One of the really nice features about this laptop is the fact that it has a 17” Full-HD display with a 144Hz refresh rate, which provide enough real estate (as well as minimal latency) to allow you to perform at your absolute best in competitive games, even when you’re on the road.

The Strix 17” is also packaged in a lovely dark-grey case, with some lovely RGB lighting, and it also comes with a terabyte of SSD storage, meaning you can start downloading and playing your favourite titles right away.

Although eSports titles tend to be better-optimised to perform on a wide variety of setups, it’s still a great idea to invest in an above-average performing PC if you’re looking to play them seriously. In that regard, the ASUS Rog Strix 17” is the perfect mobile companion for taking your favourite games wherever you go.
