With no official word from Sony, our prediction for the PS5 Pro release date is very much speculative. Here’s everything we know about the mid-generation upgrade.

It’s been a busy few years for Sony and its hugely popular PlayStation platform. In case you missed them, this year we’ve seen the release of the PSVR 2, and Sony’s first Pro controller, the DualSense Edge. Most recently, the PS5 Slim is now available to buy after a long, spefculative build up. So, with the above rumours in mind, let’s go over our own speculation on the PS5 Pro’s possible launch.

At the very start of the rumour cycle, PlayStation fans were expecting an almost generational leap from the standard PS5 addition. The rumours, which come from unverified sources on social media, claim that the console aims to provide “consistent FPS and at 4k” and a new performance mode for 8K resolution and “accelerated ray-tracing”, at least according to reliable leaker Tom Henderson. In the past, he successfully predicted the release of Project Q, aka the PlayStation Portal. Of course that doesn’t mean the PS5 Pro is coming though – we’ll have to hang tight a little bit longer.

PS5 Pro release date rumours – when could it launch?

According to Tom Henderson, the PlayStation 5 Pro, which has the codename ‘Trinity’, could be expected to release in November 2024. That would mean it would arrive prior to GTA 6. The speculative console has apparently been in development since the beginning of 2022, though these sources are unverified apparently because the leakers asked to remain anonymous.

Another nod to the potential PS5 Pro comes from the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, who alluded to the system’s development during an interview with GamesIndustry. When he was asked about the possibility of a mid-generation refresh, he said “we probably will” get one from the current generation.

These unverified sources suggesting a November 2024 release date are not unsupported by patterns we’ve noticed in PlayStation’s release cycles either. Generally speaking, PlayStation releases a new console roughly once every four years, as we’ve documented in our PlayStation console timeline. The regular PS5 launched in November 2020, while there were three years between the PS4 and PS4 Pro. Therefore, if Sony is sticking to their usual timeline, then a 2024 release date for PS5 Pro could be really likely.

To turn up the heat even further, a once confidential now public document Sony submitted to the CMA last year hinted that the PS6 could release “around” a certain date, which is redacted. However, numerous sources speculate that this could be “some time after 2027”, at least according to Axios reporter Stephen Totilo. If this proves true, then it’s likely we can expect the PS5 Pro release sometime before then.

Will the PS5 Pro be released before GTA 6?

Since the GTA 6 trailer was released, speculation has been wild about whether it’ll be possible to play GTA 6 on the speculative PS5 Pro. The GTA 6 release date hasn’t been confirmed so far. That being said, we do have a comment from a former Rockstar developer who discussed the priority of the studio when developing games like GTA 6. He said: “A PC port always comes later because they wanna prioritize what sells first.” With this in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised if you’ll be able to play GTA 6 on the speculative PS5 Pro.

The latest PS5 Pro news roundup

  • Microsoft said the next generation of consoles will start to release from 2028, suggesting the PS5 Pro could come sooner.
  • CEO of Take-Two Interactive confidently believes the PS5 Pro will happen.
  • Tom Henderson of Insider Gamer, a reliable leaker, claims that the PS5 Pro is “100% in development”.
  • Tom Henderson says The PS5 Pro will apparently have 30 WGP (work group processors) and be able to reach 18,000 MT/s for memory.

PS5 Pro price prediction

With no concrete information from Sony about the PS5 Pro, we can only speculate how much the console could be. Taking ourselves back to the PS4 Pro that launched for $399, we can speculate that the PS5 Pro could cost more than this given its rumoured upgrades. It’s also safe to assume that the PS5 Pro will cost more than the original disc version, meaning the PS5 Pro could cost between $600 – $700. As ever, take these predictions with a pinch of salt.

PS5 Pro design speculation

The PS5 Pro design is another exciting factor to consider as we speculate about its release. The PS5 was released in 2020 as a gargantuan console, and if the PS5 Pro is more powerful, then we can expect the size to be even bigger to house the new specs. However, given many fans have complained and ridiculed the size of the PS5 console, Sony could make an effort to ensure the PS5 Pro is less bulky than its predecessor. We also aren’t holding our breath for a stand to be included with the PS5 Pro – simply because the PS5 Slim stand had to be bought separately (which felt like a bit of a cash grab).

We’d also like to see a PS5 Pro released with the traditional black Sony design, rather than the galactic themed PS5 colour-scheme.

We’ll upgrade this section once we get some official design leaks, so stay tuned!

PS5 Pro specs and performance speculation

CNET has speculated the PS5 Pro could see a boost, potentially using AMD’s Zen 4 and RDNA 3 CPU/GPU partnership, though this isn’t based on any concrete information. While it’s true that the PS5 Pro will likely see a performance uplift from its predecessor, we’re still waiting on some confirmation from Sony. Once again, Tom Henderson claims anonymous sources have stated that thee PS5 Pro will have a 30 WGP and 18000mts memory, targeting improved and consistent FPS at 4K resolution, and a new ‘performance mode’ for 8K resolution, and accelerated ray tracing. The possibility of ‘accelerated ray tracing’ seems supported by a patent by PS5 architect Mark Cerny that was spotted by Gamingnews back in 2022 via X (formerly known as Twitter).

Proof? Could we see Ray Tracing upgrades with the next PS5?

It’s an easy assumption to make that this could be a sign of things to come with the next PS5, but we should say that patents aren’t (and are rarely) an indicator of the final product.

It does give a spec to add to our watchlist, however, and we wouldn’t think it was too left field to imagine Sony improving ray-tracing with the next PS5. We have, of course, seen significant improvements in performance in the past with the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

That being said, we don’t have much to go on at this stage, but if we had to put together our wishlist for the PS5 Pro, we’d sure love to see improvements in Ray Tracing and an upgraded CPU and GPU.

Whether that happens or not is still very much up in the air, as is one all-important feature…

Would the PS5 Pro release be worth the upgrade?

If you’re already an owner of the PS5 console, then the PS5 Pro would be a serious commitment given the price it would likely retail for. It all depends on your needs though. If the PS5 Pro does end up delivering 8K, and you can afford the best 8K gaming monitor, then, by all means, go for the mid-generation upgrade. That being said, if you’re happy gaming in 4K and don’t fancy shelling out on a brand new console, you may be better off upgrading to the PS5, or PS5 Slim.

It’s worth reiterating that everything PS5-Pro related is based on rumours at the time of writing. Time will tell whether the PS5 Pro will be worth the upgrade on release

Things we’d hope to see with a PS5 Pro

With nothing confirmed it’s easy to get bogged down in the negative. But let’s not forget, with the possibility of an update, we might be seeing fixes and updates to some of the more disappointing features of the PS5. At the risk of sounding too bright-eyed, this is a chance to see some really exciting things from PlayStation. So, what do we want to see?

Well, first off, more storage. The current PS5 model offers a 825 GB custom SSD, and the PS5 Slim has upgraded this to 1 TB. Given the sheer amount of space a single PS5 game takes up, we’d not be averse to PlayStation expanding the storage furtther.

Second, it would be nice (but we’re not holding our breath) for a bit more backwards compatibility between consoles. The thing with half-gen consoles is they’re exactly what they say on the tin. They’re the half way point between this generation and the next. We would be a bit disappointed if the PS5 ‘Pro’ ended up being a bit a lone wolf vis-a-vis compatible games.

Finally, visuals. 8k, anyone? Ok, maybe not 8k but at least better FPS. For PS5 its Raytracing compatibility was a major selling point. Since then we’re really excited to see ray tracing coming to more and more games. It’s clear a new era of gameplay visuals is being ushered in and it would be exciting to see PlayStation lead the charge even more on this one.
