If you’re looking for the GPU equivalent of the PS4 Pro – take a look at this.

The PS4 Pro was released in 2016 as an advanced model of the PS4. It features a GPU especially designed for the first games console capable of running at 4K, so if we’re looking for its equivalent we’re going to need to ensure it can also game at 4K.

The GPU inside the PS4 Pro was designed by AMD and is based off the Neo graphics processor from the GCN 2.0 architecture. Its variant name was the ‘CXD90044GB’, but for simplicity’s sake let’s refer to it as the PS4 Pro GPU.

The PS4 Pro GPU had a clock speed of 911 MHz, and the memory clock ran at 1700 MHz. It’s interesting that the GPU in the Xbox Series S has almost double the clock speed and shader units, yet doesn’t operate past 1440p. It seems as though the PS4 Pro prioritised resolution, whereas the Xbox Series S obviously prioritises frame-rate.

With 8GB of GDDR5 memory and 2304 shader units, we can use this information to figure out what the GPU equivalent of the PS4 Pro is. This might be especially useful if you’re looking to build a PC that can game at 4K at 30 / 60 FPS. This is perhaps more suited to budget-friendly PC builds – which are aimed at people looking to enjoy atmospheric games rather than competitive games. If that’s you – we think the RTX 3050 and RX 6500 XT are the best equivalent GPUs to the PS4 Pro.

The RTX 3050 features 8GB VRAM, 2560 shader units, and was built with a 8nm process size. Similarly, the RX 6500 XT features a 6nm process size, 4GB VRAM, and 1024 shader units.

The RX 6500 XT would definitely be more suited to 1080p than 4K, while the RTX 3050 is certainly capable of churning out 4K gameplay. Both of these GPUs come from the 2019 generation of graphics cards, Ampere for the RTX 3050 and RDNA 2.0 for the RX 6500 XT. The PS4 Pro GPU was manufactured in 2016 as part of the GCN 2.0 architecture, and so it precedes these two GPUs by quite a bit. That being said, due to the nature of SoC (System on a Chip) GPUs being extremely well optimised for the games they’re running – they actually draw similar performance.

In light of all this, if you’re looking to build a PC with similar performance to the PS4 Pro, the RTX 3050 and RX 6500 XT are the GPUs best equipped to offer this. In fact, it’s likely that they’ll outperform the PS4 Pro. For a console released three years prior to the GPUs – this isn’t something to be particularly ashamed about.
