Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro is one of the industry’s worst-kept secrets, but the console has been kept under wraps. A new report by a prominent Sony leaker reveals just what the PS5 Pro design looks like, and it may abandon the disc drive.
Following PS5 Pro game developers discussing the system at Gamescom, prominent leaker Billbil-Kun has revealed what Sony’s mid-gen refresh will look like.
Based on alleged images of the PS5 Pro box, mockup illustrations and renders show a very similar design. In fact, the console looks largely similar to a standard PS5 console, including the same front IO.
While largely similar to a standard console, the PS5 Pro design sports three black lines instead of one. However, the Pro console may still be able to use faceplates from the existing consoles.
On the front, the alleged PS5 Pro design features the exact same IO as the existing slim. This means two USB-C and a power button adorn the front, but rear ports were not revealed.
Furthermore, the console design doesn’t include a controller. While a new DualSense controller is reportedly in the works, this new console may not come with it.
No disc tray?
By far the biggest issue with the alleged PS5 Pro design is the lack of a disc drive. While unconfirmed, it appears at least one version of the new machine will not include a disc drive despite its assumed higher cost.
“The visual we have comes from a PS5 Pro without a disc player,” the report reads. “We do not know about the existence of an edition with a disc player, even if it will probably be possible to put a disc player on it (like the PS5 Slim).”
With sales of the PS5 Digital Edition performing well, Sony may be planning to scrap the disc drive for its Pro machine to keep the price down. However, with the device pitched as a professional grade gaming device, the lack of a disc drive is saddening.
There is still no PS5 Pro release date, but reports claim the device should launch later this year.
