Trials Fusion Awesome Level Max is the first DLC released outside of the season pass. It’s priced £7.99, twice that of one of the previous post-release packs, but offers good value, with 30 new tracks, 10 supercross tracks, 30 challenges and over 130 editor objects. It also features a cat riding a unicorn while wielding a flamethrower.

Despite being the focus of the marketing, the cat and unicorn make up less than a third of the content included, featuring only in eight Trials tracks. Here you begin on a bike only to be transformed into the cat and unicorn team for most of the remainder, before turning back into a bike again on the final stage. These courses are visually unique, thanks to the galloping mythical stallion, but I can’t say they played that much differently despite a few cool ideas.

It’s also a shame the Awesome Adventure isn’t actually more of an adventure. The developers clearly had some fun putting together the courses and the characters, but the whole thing is still presented as a series of events rather than a cohesive campaign. Some cutscenes and story would have helped flesh out the experience and made it feel more distinct from the rest of the game.

The other 22 tracks are split between a selection made by developer RedLynx and the best of the community. It’s a nice mixture, with plenty for casual players and a handful of offerings for the hardcore – which is nice as some of the previous DLC definitely skewed a little too much towards expert players. On the whole the community-developed stuff stands up well compared to the dev efforts, with only one standing out as a little basic.

As ever, you can breeze through the majority of the tracks included in a few hours, with only the extreme courses presenting any real challenge. The value then comes from trying to score a Gold medal or Platinum on each, and attempting to beat your friends’ best times.

Course creators will hopefully make use of the new editor objects to build more wacky stages, as the content on the whole isn’t nearly as crazy as the trailer suggests. Still, for £8 (or included as part of a mega collection with all previous DLC and main game for £33) it’s a good chunk of new Trials content, even if the best part is the less high-profile RedLynx vs All-Stars suite of traditional tracks.

Awesome Level Max includes some excellent action that is worth the price tag if you’re itching for some more Trials Fusion, but sadly the Awesome Adventure isn’t nearly as expansive nor as interesting as I’d have liked.
