Bobby Carrot’s colourful interface and hum-along soundtrack deceive you into thinking that you’re playing a simple children’s puzzler. It’s only when you delve a little further into the rabbit warren that you realise that all is not as it seems – this bunny is feral.

The Bobby Carrot series has its roots in traditional mobile phone gaming and has seen many renditions across the mobile market over the years. Bobby Carrot Forever follows its predecessors with the same basic structure of isometric puzzle solving and bright colourful visuals with the only real change coming from the touch screen controls. The player assumes the role of Bobby (a floppy eared bunny) and is tasked with collecting an allocated number of carrots per level before finding the finish point. Obstacles are thrown in, such as crumbling planks (that can only be walked over once) and spiked floors (that block your path once activated). The key to solving the puzzles is to plan all of your actions ahead by zooming the camera out and surveying the level as a whole.

Bobby Carrot differs from other puzzlers with its clever use of deception. For example, a level may contain a number of switches that control various functions but not all of them will need to be switched to reach the target. What initially seems like a simple level can turn into a mind-bending struggle of trial and error gameplay that will often leave you restarting the stage time and time again. Unusually this style of gameplay rarely becomes frustrating as the puzzles are so charmingly intricate that they inspire a sense of closure just to see how they all fit together.

The levels range from challenging to downright difficult, with a smattering of coin collecting mini-game stages to break up the puzzle solving. There is no tangible learning curve as simple levels often follow much more complex stages. This arrangement actually works well as it stops you from becoming bogged down for too long and keeps the momentum flowing nicely.

Visually it’s dated, but that really doesn’t matter.

The visuals in Bobby Carrot Forever are filled with bold colours that hark back to its Flash and Java roots. Undoubtedly the graphics are going to feel too simplistic for some gamers but the playability in Bobby Carrot relies on clarity rather than stylistic flair and you soon learn to pass over any graphical foibles.

Bobby Carrot Forever is a deceptively intelligent puzzler that will have you smiling more often than grimacing. If you can live with some dated visuals and want something that will test your mental prowess then Bobby Carrot Forever is definitely worth a look.
