Ubisoft’s new free-to-play shooter XDefiant is off to a rocky start with the first few days of its closed beta – with connection issues seeing consoles unable to play for large portions of the weekend.

The beta launched last week, and is running until the end of this one – but due to connection issues with the game’s servers, many players were finding themselves struggling to get on the beta. While Ubisoft did of course tackle these connection issues as best they could with a series of patches on PC, console players had to wait a little longer.

A glimpse at the game’s Trello board shows a number of issues the team are working on – with the connection issues being a main priority. On Saturday, the game’s official Twitter account revealed that these issues would require a game client update to fix. While Ubisoft were able to provide a patch for PC owners, unfortunately for consoles they were at the mercy of the certification process, leaving them unable to play at all for at least a day. “Consoles will unfortunately now be unable to access the game until we can bring this patch to consoles as soon as we can.

“We know this is disappointing news for console players,” they tweeted. “However, this patch should provide a much better experience for everyone when deployed!” To make up for the lack of access, Ubisoft has granted all console owners PC access to the beta, so they could still play there if their machine was up to the task.

The patch arrived on PlayStation consoles by Sunday evening, as declared on the Twitter account. However, as of the time of writing the Xbox version of the beta is still unplayable. “We are still working to patch Xbox Series X|S as soon as we can. Xbox servers will still be disabled and show a VICTOR error message.”

Of course it’s important to stress that, as a beta, technical issues are to be expected but at the time of writing Ubisoft has not declared if it’ll be extending the beta to account for the missed time on Xbox. It’s also worth noting that Ubisoft is also offering rewards for the full release to those who play the beta, meaning Xbox owners now have less time to earn them. If you’re not up to speed, XDefiant is an upcoming free-to-play shooter that sees players go up against each other as various character types based on Ubisoft titles like Splinter Cell, Far Cry and Watch Dogs to name a few. We’ve had some hands-on time with the game, which you can read about in our XDefiant gameplay preview.
