Developer Auroch Digital and publisher Focus Entertainment have set a May release date for upcoming retro-styled FPS Warhammer 40000 Boltgun.

As per the game’s most recent trailer, Warhammer 40000 will launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on May 23, 2023 – with pre-orders available now on the digital stores of their respective formats.

A 90’s style shooter, the game takes obvious inspiration from classic genre mainstays like Quake and Doom – but puts a Games Workshop Warhammer 40000 dressing on things, but tooled up with the modern gameplay mechanics to sit right at home on modern formats. The pixel art gives things a retro flavour, but expect plenty of digitised gore and loads of weapons to blast through the game’s levels with.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, a new post gives us an idea of what we can expect from the game. We’ll take on the role of a Space Marine, who’s out to wipe out the Warriors and daemons of Chaos with a host of Imperial weaponry at your disposal. Interestingly enough, enemies won’t be deposited randomly on the map, but rather dynamically spawned by an “intelligent system to seek the most exciting positions to challenge the player.”

The blog also goes into detail about how the team’s used a hybrid of 3D animated models that are then taken pictures of, and ported into the Unreal engine like a flipbook animation. This gives the best of both worlds, Auroch claims, allowing the team to create what looks and feels like a classic 90s game while utilising modern game development techniques.

Players will get to find out for themselves when Warhammer 40000 Boltgun arrives on May 23, 2023. It’s of course not the only Warhammer game fans will get their hands on this year, with the Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 release date also expected to be set at some point before the end of the year.
