EA and 39 Studios can celebrate the UK No.1 position, with the well-reviewed Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning toppling last week’s leader Final Fantasy XIII-2. It’s the first new IP to top the charts since Dead Island in week 37 of 2011, and the first new RPG IP to top the chart since Pokemon Red back in 2000,

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 slips to No. 2 due to a 54 per cent drop in sales, while 2K Games’ bloody The Darkness 2 gets a podium place at No. 3. Konami’s Metal Gear Solid HD Collection suffers a 49 per cent sales drop to find itself at No. 4, while EA’s ever-present FIFA 12 manages to nab fifth spot.

Other new entries come from Catherine at No. 20, and EA’s Grand Slam Tennis 2 at No. 26, while SEGA’s Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games climbs from No.31 to No. 10 thanks to its release on the 3DS.

We don’t know how many units Reckoning sold, but a No.1 chart entry for a brand-new IP is very good news for EA and 39 Studios. Less good is the performance of 2K’s The Darkness 2, which couldn’t chart ahead of last week’s Final Fantasy XIII-2 despite some strong reviews.

Still, chances are most of last week’s new releases will hang around as there aren’t many games hitting stores on Friday. THQ’s UFC Undisputed 3 is the big contender for the No.1 spot next week, while Namco Bandai’s Tekken 3D: Prime Edition will do well to enter the top 10.
