Gamasutra and the NPD Group have put together a very interesting list of the top five selling games on each console for the year to date (January to August).

Expectedly, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV tops the sales this year on PS3 and Xbox 360, with combined sales in excess of 4.8 million copies. EA’s Madden NFL 09 and Activision’s Call of Duty 4 also make the PS3/360 top five. Interestingly the PS3 top five includes two platform exclusives in the shape of Metal Gear Solid 4 (No. 2) and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (No. 5), while the 360 top five contains no exclusives and no games from Microsoft Game Studios.

PS3 Top Five

1. Grand Theft Auto IV

2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

4. Madden NFL 09

Xbox 360 Top Five

While game sales on Xbox 360 and PS3 are strong, according to Gamasutra they are dwarfed by game sales on the Wii. The top five selling games this year on the Wii have a combined total of almost 12 million units. It’s also worth pointing out that four of the five games are Wii exclusives and that four come packaged with a peripheral. Guitar Hero III is the only game in the Wii top five from a third-party publisher.
