Crystal Dynamics has hammered home the message that Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is a “reimagining” of Lara Croft’s 1996 PS1 debut rather than a remake. The game chronologically takes place after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released back in 2018, and a leaker suggests it will debut the Society of Raiders.
Speaking during a Q&A session attended by videogameschronicle, Scott Amos, the head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, says, “Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is a love letter by fans, all of us, for fans”. It is set to release in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and it is “something special to celebrate” the series’ 30th anniversary.
With Amos describing Legacy of Atlantis as a “reimagining,” Will Kerslake, game director at Crystal Dynamics, adds, “We want to honor the legacy of that original game by modernizing it with a gameplay experience and a fidelity that’s now possible in Unreal 5”.
Amos also says areas in the old game that were just a background image are “now completely realized in full 3D”. The game has updated camera and controls as part of the modernization, too, and unforgettable moments from the first game, such as stumbling into a fight with a T.Rex, have been reimagined to create an “epic action adventure moment” that will amaze both series veterans and newcomers.
Leaker claims Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis will debut the Society of Raiders
Although Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is a “reimagining” rather than a remake, it will still tell the same story as the 1996 classic. The original plot involves Lara Croft, hired by Jacqueline Natla, travelling to Peru, Greece, and Egypt to find three fragments that make up the Scion of Atlantis.
While Legacy of Atlantis will retell the story, a big difference could be the debut of the Society of Raiders. V Scooper is a leaker on X who has been reporting about an open-world Tomb Raider game in India starring Lara Croft in her “prime” since 2024. These leaks have now come to fruition with the grand reveal of Tomb Raider Catalyst at The Game Awards.
On X, V Scooper claims that “The Society of Raiders debuts in Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis as allies, but internal factions evolve years later into dangerous rivals in Catalyst”. Officially speaking, the Society of Raiders is Crystal Dynamics’ name for fans who have signed up for the Tomb Raider newsletter. However, in-game, V Scooper claims that the Society of Raiders is a group “inspired by Lara, but some have opposite agendas”.
Crystal Dynamics hasn’t confirmed the Society of Raiders as an in-game commodity, but Lara’s dual pistols in the Legacy of Atlantis trailer do bear the Society of Raiders logo. Assuming the faction is introduced in Legacy of Atlantis, it will be interesting to see what their affiliation is with Lara and how big a role they play.
Other details we know about Legacy of Atlantis include Alix Wilton Regan taking over as the new voice actor for Lara Croft. The game’s trailer has smashed millions of views on YouTube, and it shares the same universe as the Amazon Prime series currently in development, starring Sophie Turner as Lady Croft.
