HBO Max’s ‘The Penguin’ Adds Cristin Milioti

Deadline have reported that Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother, Palm Springs, Made For Love) has just been cast in ‘The Penguin’, a limited TV mini series coming to HBO Max, that, as its name suggests, will be a spin off of writer/producer/director, Matt Reeve’s, ‘The Batman‘.

Set after the events of ‘The Batman’, the series is said to focus on the power vacuum left in Gotham’s criminal underworld following the events of the movie’s finale, and will follow Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot aka “The Penguin” as he seeks to take control of Gotham’s criminal enterprises for himself.

But, his rise to power will not be an easy one. As, among the adversaries he will have to contend with, it has been confirmed that Milioti will be playing Sofia Falcone, the daughter of notorious Gotham crime boss, Carmine “The Roman” Falcone (played in ‘The Batman’ by John Turturro).

Now, if the name Sofia Falcone sounds familiar, that is because she most famously appeared in the iconic and landmark ‘Batman’ comic book story, ‘The Long Halloween‘. A story on which Reeves took a lot of inspiration from in his creation of ‘The Batman. With several plot points from the book, such as Doctor Thomas Wayne saving Carmine Falcone’s life with emergency surgery in the Wayne Manor dining room, transplanted from the comics straight on to the cinema screen.

It makes sense then given the the influence of ‘The Long Halloween’ story that Reeves would wish to further explore some of its plot points within the upcoming ‘The Penguin’ series. But, without giving away any spoilers for ‘The Long Halloween’ story and possibly, ‘The Penguin’ series. It will certainly be interesting for DC Comics fans and fans of ‘The Long Halloween’ story to see how closely Reeves holds to Sofia’s depiction in that story.

As, given that Milioti does not physically resemble her comics’ counterpart, who was mockingly given the nickname, “Giganta”. It will be interesting to see if Reeves adapts those particular aspects of Sofia’s story. Or, if is he intending to take the character in a newer direction, possibly seeking revenge for her father. And if so, while she has not been announced yet, could we see Milioti’s Sofia coming into conflict with Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman?
