Directed by Yoshiyuki Momose and based on the book by A.F Harrold and illustrated by Emily Gravett. The release date for Yaneura no Rudger or The Imaginary is December 15, 2023, in Japanese cinemas and worldwide in 2024. It was created by Studio Ponoc, known for its fantastic children’s stories such as Mary and the Witch’s Flower and Tomorrow’s Leaves. The movie is directed by Yoshiyuki Momose – best known for 1991’s Only Yesterday and 1992’s Porco Rosso.

As you can expect, The Imaginary will have a similar classic theme, however, it will have a more modernized look. The production crew at Studio Ponoc will bring you stunning hand-drawn animation and painted backgrounds with their new animated film, The Imaginary.

Studio Ponoc has also released a new theme song by A Great Big World featuring Rachel Platten called Nothing’s Impossible. The theme song was written and composed by Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino. What is The Imaginary about?

The Imaginaries is a story about Rudger, a young boy no one can see. Rudger is an imaginary friend created by Amanda Shuffleup, who has lost her love. Unfortunately, like many other imaginary friends, Amanda will soon forget Rudger as she grows up and reality hits.

Once a human forgets about their Imaginary, they disappear. Thankfully, Rudger does not have to succumb to this fate. After being forgotten by humans, Imaginaries can make their way to a place known as the Town of Imaginaries, where all Imaginaries can live together in peace.

However, Rudger soon finds himself a target of Mr. Bunting, an Imaginary hunter. Rudger then finds himself on a quest to find Amanda before Mr. Bunting catches him and before Amanda forgets about him. Will Rudger find Amanda before she forgets about him? Or will Mr. Bunting catch him first?
