Publisher Thunderful Group has announced that upcoming alien exploration adventure The Gunk will launch this December.

Some new gameplay footage of the game, first announced last summer, was shown during Xbox’s Gamescom presentation last night. Playing as Rani, you’re playing as one half of a space mining duo who stumble across a barren planet covered in the mysterious titular Gunk. It seems this Gunk is corrupting the planet, and you’ll be battling it as you uncover the secrets beneath.

Rani also has use of her trusty power-glove that she calls Pumpkin. Shell use it to clean up the Gunk by sucking it in like vacuum. As you do so, you’ll uncover an ancient civilisation and find out more about the planet. You’ll also see the natural ecosystem bounce back as you traverse jungles and rocky canyons, scanning as you go to learn more about the world. Naturally, your Pumpkin is upgradable too.

The game comes from Image & Form Games, who created the excellent SteamWorld Dig series, with the last entry being 2019’s SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech which released on Nintendo Switch and PC.
