“The Crow”, Writer and Artist, James O’ Barr’s, iconic, beautiful, and timeless story of the power of love and the pain of loss, created as a means to process his own pain after the loss of his fiancé, is a property that has long caught the eyes of Hollywood studio executives seeking to capitalise on the importance of the franchise to legions of fans the world over.

Beginning with several ideas to adapt and change the story, including seeking to adapt it into a movie musical starring the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson as tragic lead character, Eric Draven. An idea which, literally, caused O’ Barr to leave the room laughing.

To the iconic and beloved 1994 movie adaptation starring, Brandon Lee, as Eric, in a role that would come to define his career and legacy for the decades to come, not just because of his passing while filming a scene for the movie. But because of the depth of his performance, showing Eric as both a man tortured by the loss of his soul mate and the pain she endured, and as a terrifying avenging angel sent to punish his murderers for their sins while simultaneously redeeming and protecting the innocent caught in their wake.

Now, after 1 theatrical sequel (The Crow: City of Angels), 1 television sequel (The Crow: Stairway to Heaven), 2 direct to home video sequels (The Crow: Salvation, The Crow: Wicked Prayer), and 10 years of failed attempts to bring the franchise back to cinema screens by once again adapting the original comic series and telling Eric Draven’s story, that, had any of them been completed, would have seen Jason Momoa, Luke Evans, or Jack Huston donning the iconic black and white grease paint.

It is Bill Skarsgård (IT, IT Chapter Two, Castle Rock) who will be the next actor to bring Eric Draven to life in live action, starring in a brand new “The Crow” movie for Director, Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman, Ghost in The Shell).

Where can I watch the movie?

No release plans have been officially confirmed yet for the movie. But, it is highly likely that it will be released, initially, exclusively to cinemas. With a home video release, and a release on streaming platforms after the movie’s theatrical run has ended.

What is the story of “The Crow”?

In the original comic series, the story revolves around Eric Draven, who, we find out as the story progresses was murdered a year before along with his girlfriend, Shelly, by a gang of criminals who found Eric and Shelly when their car had broken down while returning home from a picnic. The criminals brutalised both of them, killing Shelly where the car had broken down, and leaving Eric to die hours later in hospital.

He was resurrected by The Crow to seek revenge on the criminals who took his and Shelly’s life, and we see the story play out in both the present as Eric hunts them down, one by one, while also showing flashbacks to his life before, and then during the attack.

Then, in the 1994 movie adaptation from Director, Alex Proyas, starring Brandon Lee, the premise remains the same, but there are changes to the events of the comics story. As in the movie, Eric comes home to his loft apartment with Shelly, to find Shelly being intimidated by the criminals of the comics, over letters of complaint she’d written regarding the tenants of their building being driven out of their homes.

They attack both Shelly and Eric, killing Eric first, while Shelly is the one who dies later in the hospital from her wounds. When Eric is resurrected to seek his revenge a year later, the leader of the gang that murdered him, upon realising Eric’s supernatural power, seeks to take it for himself leading to final climactic battle atop a rain swept church.

The movie also gives a greater role to Officer Albrecht than he has in the comics, and changes the character of Sherri to Sarah, and gives her a larger role in the movie, being revealed as a friend and surrogate daughter of Shelly and Eric.

With early reports of the filming for this latest adaptation of “The Crow”, it’s uncertain how much of the original comics it will be adapting for its story, and how much will be an original story that chooses to only use the premise and names of the original comics.
