The DS version of the classic game will feature new game types that are only possible on the DS. Each of the game’s six modes of play feature a theme based on a classic Nintendo game, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid.

The block falling gameplay remains intact, but the use of the DS touch screen is said to bring a new level of interactivity. Full details of the game have not been released, but so far we know of several game modes. We assume the game will include the standard mode where the aim is to keep the screen clear of blocks for as long as possible whilst scoring points by clearing lines. A puzzle mode has been confirmed which will require players to solve special Tetris puzzles.

The game will also feature multiplayer action with head-to-head play between two players, or huge ten-player wireless battles with only one game cart. Tetris DS will also support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, allowing online play for up to four players. Points will be awarded during online battles, with the score indicating your skill level.

The game is scheduled for release in North America on March 20. At this time no official announcement has been made regarding a European release.
