GTA 6 is set to be one of the biggest games of all time, likely breaking many sales records that were previously held by GTA 5. With the previous entry in the series selling more than 200 million copies, Rockstar Games has an extremely large player base ready for the next installment in the series. Unfortunately, some of those players may have to wait a while longer as GTA 6 won’t be launching on PC, instead it will initially only be available on console.
During the TD Cowen Conference, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed in an interview why GTA 6 won’t be launching on PC and instead will first be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
“The lack of an announcement is not something that could be set in stone as near as I could tell, because the only thing that happens after the lack of an announcement is an announcement, I suppose, or a continuing lack of an announcement, I guess that could happen too. It doesn’t seem to me that either would be set in stone.”
I must admit, I have no idea what Zelnick is trying to say here, but he did elaborate on the PC version of GTA 6 saying,
“Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they will make more announcements in due time. I do believe that the right strategy for our business is to be where the consumer is, and historically what this company has done is address consumers anywhere they are, on any platform that makes sense, over time.”
Rockstar Games hasn’t released a mainline game in any of its franchises on PC on day one since GTA 2 back in 1999, so it isn’t surprising that GTA 6 won’t be launching on PC alongside console. However, in 2024 the PC market is the same size as all consoles combined in terms of revenue. But it is likely that Rockstar Games knows that PC players will either own a console or many will be willing to buy a console specifically to play GTA 6 at launch, as well as then buying the game on PC in the future, I will be one of these people.
GTA 6 is currently slated to release in 2025, but no release window or information has been given since the game was announced in December 2023.
