Rogue Games and Silkworm have unveiled Super Mega Zero, a retro-themed mash of genres coming to Switch and PC at the end of the month.
The setup sees Miss Undefined kidnapped by the villainous Kill Screen. That means it’s up to you as the literally-named Zero to save her. Cue a frantic race across hundreds of levels that mix platforming, puzzling and shoot-em-up gameplay. Each level is handcrafted, and promises frantic, fast paced action.
For example, the platforming sections feel like Super Meat Boy or Celeste, but with a retro arcade aesthetic. Meanwhile the shooting sections evoke both side scrolling classic shumps like R-Type and top down affairs like Ikaruga. Along the way, you’ll touch upgrades and improve Zeros abilities, eventually turning him into a bonafide Hero. The world is also full of collectible Pis, which you’ll find hidden throughout the levels too.
As an April Fool’s day bonus, publisher Rogue Games has also written a blog post imagining the game as a remake of a fictional 1989 game called Mega Zero. You can read on that here, if you like. You can check out a trailer for the game below. Super Mega Zero is currently set for release on April 21 on the Nintendo Switch and the PC.
