In Helldivers 2, players have the choice to face the Automatons or Terminids. While most prefer the Terminids, the robot Automatons offer a much more varied experience, with their missions requiring a lot of strategies rather than simply running and gunning as is often the case with Terminids. Automaton missions also have a lot of interesting side objectives that shake the game up in fun, although often stressful, ways.
U/Mr_Ivysaur took to the Helldivers 2 sub-Reddit to share an “unpopular opinion” that they don’t mind the Stratagem Jammers during missions. If you’ve never encountered one, it is a large radar tower, usually surrounded by dozens of Automatons, that sends out a signal that blocks the use of all Stratagems over a wide area. This means that you can’t call down support weapons, sentries, or Eagle/Orbital explosives.
Because of this, many players understandably dislike them, but Mr_IvySaur seems to be an exception saying “I absolutely love that I have to go full SWAT on it and rely on your guns and nothing more. It’s not just approach and throw an eagle, you have to go inside and depend on yourself. I love how it makes you notice how weak and fragile you are without offensive Stratagems. For these 1-2 minutes in a mission, it feels like a different game for a while, and that’s so spicy. I really hope that the Mega bases on the upcoming update gives more of this gameplay by any means.”
Surprisingly, they weren’t alone with this opinion, as other users agreed that Stratagem Jammers add a fun twist on Automaton missions, with u/ReisysV saying “I love all the bot side objectives way more than the bugs. I couldn’t even say off the top of my head what half the bug ones even are. But every bot side op either has a lasting significant effect on the run (aa missiles) or is a highly recognizable and significant obstacle you know you’ll have to think about approaching and give due attention to stopping.”
It does also seem to be a popular opinion among the Helldivers 2 community that Stratagem Jammers are better to deal with than Gunships, but many hate when both spawn near each other and overlap, creating a lot of chaos as you are unable to defend yourself from them. U/Misfiring touched on this by saying “Jammers by themselves are trivial. The problem comes when they’re paired with another jammer, or worse a gunship fabricator, or even worse, a detector. It is near impossible to storm the jammer when a detector is constantly summoning units.”
Gunships have long been a despised aspect of Automaton missions, with them appearing from difficulty 6. These flying Automatons will stalk players across the map, firing an endless barrage of missiles that are hard to avoid. In recent weeks we have seen many complaints about them, with many players calling for them to either be nerfed or removed from the game. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but with the Escalation of Freedom update coming on August 6th, we can expect many quality-of-life changes to come to Helldivers 2, so it will be interesting to see whether Automaton rockets and ragdolling will be addressed.
