There’s been little information revealed about the factions in Starfield outside of what we all saw during the Starfield Direct last month, but fans of the upcoming Bethesda release over on the game’s Reddit page think they’ve already figured out who the game’s antagonists will be.
Taking to the Starfield Reddit, user Server16Ark proclaimed that, “the Exliptic will serve as the army for the game’s antagonist.” In their post, they expanded a little further on their reasoning behind this assumption. They claimed that due to the high-tech aesthetic of the faction, as well as them always being indicted as enemies in gameplay footage, it seems almost guaranteed that they would be the main opposing force in Starfield. Alongside this, they also pointed to similarities in the Precursor “portal” and the Ecliptic symbol.
While other players were quick to note that the reasoning behind the Ecliptic symbol is likely a reference to a solar eclipse and not the portal shown, Server16Ark was adamant that the symbol was a deliberate clue for players. They said, “It also looks like the portals. I believe this was a deliberate symbol to clue us into these guys being important to the main plot without being obnoxiously on the nose about it. I mean, they could have gone and called them “Portal Followers” or something obvious. This way it’s vague.”
They continued in detail by saying that with the Ecliptic being a group of mercenaries it would allow them to act as an overall villain in-game, given they’d have no allegiances to any faction or constellation other than themselves. Furthermore, Server16Ark suggested that because you can align with every other mentioned faction in-game that if any of them were the enemy it would create conflict in your associations. However, it should be noted that in previous Bethesda titles like Fallout 4, you were able to align with a number of factions and in turn, you’d be forced to pick an allegiance at one point or another if you progressed through the story enough.
Just because you can align yourself with any or all factions in Starfield doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t the game’s perceived “bad guys.” In any event, it could be the case that Starfield adopts a similar system to Fallout 4 where there isn’t any outright enemy faction but instead, the galaxy reacts to your allegiances and choices. Of course, this is all speculation at the moment and we’ll just have to wait and see.
