With the Starfield release date just around the corner, fans are getting more and more excited to jump into Bethesda’s next major RPG experience. While many have been focusing on the level of freedom the game is advertising alongside the game’s companions, factions and ship-building mechanics, one user pointed out that this is Bethesda’s first game to feature real-time pickpocketing.

Taking to the Starfield Reddit one player pointed out that “this [Starfield] is the first Bethesda game that features pickpocketing in real-time.” Other players were quick to note that the inclusion of this mechanic would significantly increase the tension of pickpocketing gameplay as opposed to previous Bethesda games. Alongside this, another player noted their love for the real-time mechanic saying, “Being swift and making quick decisions will be necessary to pickpocket someone. It’ll put a lot of pressure on finding a key among a bunch of items in an NPC’s inventory.”

Some players were even wondering if this real-time element of tension would extend to the game’s lock-picking mechanic. Citing the tension that Dying Light’s real-time lock-picking mechanic created, user baw2112 said, “I wonder if lock picking will be the same way. It is in dying light and adds a considerable amount of anxiety while trying to lock pick with baddies nearby.”

Another user pointed to one of Bethesda’s previous games, Fallout 4, saying, “One thing Fallout 4 did that it doesn’t get enough credit for is active-time looting. No need to activate a person or container and pause the game while a menu comes up. Makes looting bodies after a fight or rooms full of containers soooo much faster and less clunky. It should be the standard in all RPGs.”

It’s fair to say, fans of Starfield are looking forward to the immersive possibilities Bethesda are advertising. If you’re considering picking up Starfield when it releases in September be sure you check out our Starfield planets and Starfield companions guides.
