The long awaited sequel to Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is upon us, and critics are now coming out with their verdict on Cal Kestis’ latest adventure – Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

On an initial glance, the reviews seem very positive – with many happy to return to this particular pocket of the Star Wars universe, although some were worried it might follow a little too closely to its predecessor. We’ve rounded up a bunch of the top reviews from around the web to give you an idea of the general consensus around the game, so when it comes to the Jedi Survivor release time, you’ll be ready.

A major point that many reviewers are happy for is the fact that the game respects the journey many have made in the previous game, and resists the temptation to reset you to zero. Not only that, but it seems you unlock brand new skills pretty swiftly – as revealed in IGN’s 9/10 review: “You’re quickly thrown right back into Force-pushing Storm Troopers off of ledges and chaining together movement tricks like wall-running, climbing, swinging, and sliding down ramps. And that’s just the beginning – the Spider-Man-style grapple (which only works on pre-designated points) is introduced before you leave Coruscant, and the unlocks keep coming from there on at a rewarding pace.”

Understandably, many outlets are choosing to only address the story lightly, as it’s such a crucial feature of the game and players will be wanting to experience it for themselves. (Heck, EA have even warned against spoilers circulating online.) And to its credit, that story shines brightly – as VGC say in their own 5 star review: “Star Wars is at its best when it can trade that bombast and action with quiet moments between characters, and Survivor handles them beautifully. This is Star Wars at its best. It manages decades of lore gracefully, gives all the characters, (new and returning), time to shine, and features dozens of moments that have inspired generations to pick up the nearest mop and make whoom noises.”

Many fans of course, will be wanting to know how good that all-important saber combat is. And it’s something GamesRadar bring to our attention in their 4.5 star review. “But the real star is Cal’s new and improved saber. From the single and dual-blade setup he starts with, Cal gains three new stances; twin blades are fast and frantic, harrying foes under a persistent rain of blows until their guard breaks; the blaster stance lets Cal engage from range, recouping ammo with probing, testing strikes; and the crossguard turns saber into Zweihander, a slow but devastating weapon to smash through even the most hardy defenses.”

If flaws can be pointed at in Respawn’s ambitious follow up, is that sometimes the bigger scope can occasionally hold it back a little – and the addition of guns, Eurogamer says, feels particularly superfluous. “I cannot tell you how disappointing it is to watch Respawn contrive to add a gun to a game that doesn’t need one, and that’s backed up by the lacklustre way it’s been added. You can mash Triangle to shoot, hold it to shoot a bigger blast, do a little shoot-and-parry thing or perform a special move reminiscent of a watered-down Auto Pistol from Titanfall. It feels fine, and also completely pointless.” However, it’s certainly a minor complaint given their later praise. “Star Wars: Jedi Survivor remains fundamentally really fun. Cal’s platforming skills expand even more, and Jedi: Survivor’s set pieces have become even more elaborate.”

You’ll get to decide for yourself when Star Wars Jedi Survivor arrives on April 28, 2023 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
