Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 has been a surprise hit with the game outselling DOOM games, revitalising Warhammer stores and doing so well the studio is considering story DLC for the main campaign.

The game’s popularity is surprising for fans, but even more surprising for one of its creators. As Warhammer stores fill with fans directly quoting the game, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick has seen the title’s impact first-hand.

Space Marine 2 director witnessed fans quoting the game

In an interview with GamesRadar, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick revealed that they’ve seen fans in person quoting Space Marine 2.

In a recent visit to a Warhammer store, the creative director saw customers and employees quoting the new video game. While they didn’t reveal themselves as one of the creators of the title, they enjoyed listening to fans recite the game.

“I actually went to the Warhammer store today to buy some paints, because me and my daughter – I bought the starter set for 40K, just a handful of Space Marines and Tyranids – and we’ve been painting them in the evening,” Hollis-Leick told the outlet. “And while I was in there waiting to pay, this guy in front of me – they have no idea who I am, I don’t say anything – this customer, he was going, “What is your fate!?”, and the Games Workshop employee was going, “My duty is my fate!”

Hollis-Leick explained that the entire situation was “surreal” as it became evident how big the game has become.

A huge boom for Warhammer

As one of the biggest Warhammer releases ever, Space Marine 2 is set to receive years of additional content. New Operations, customisation and even a Horde Mode are in development, and there’s already ideas for a third game

However, it was a struggle to get the current game released as it is now. Alongside lore restrictions, the team had to fight for numerous inclusions, even its amazing ending

Nevertheless, Space Marine 2 is one of the biggest successes in the long-running franchise, and a title that has boldly brought the series into the mainstream.
