Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 allows you to battle hordes of Tyranids and take out the forces of Chaos, but the ending of the game teases a third faction lying dormant at the planet Demerium.
However, Warhammer’s creative director Dmitriy Grigorenko and creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick revealed that they had to fight to keep the ending as many thought the game was becoming too much of a “fancy dress party”.
Obviously, spoilers ahead.
Space Marine 2 teases Necrons
In the finale of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, it’s hinted that something ancient has been disturbed by the Adeptus Mechanicus. Alongside the infestation of Chaos, the planet Demerium hides an ancient Necron tomb, revealing a third faction at play.
While the fleshless mechanoids aren’t awoken in the game’s story, there is hope that the Necron threat will play a part in Space Marine 3 or some exciting story DLC.
Despite the rampant fan excitement that the Necron tease has resulted in, the team had to fight for the faction’s inclusion. Speaking to GamesRadar, the developers explained there was a lot of pushback by one team.
“It would be fair to say that Dmitriy and I had to fight quite a lot for that to be in there, because there was a concern raised by one group at one point that we were putting too much into the game,” said creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick. “It was almost becoming a kind of 40k fancy dress party in their mind.”
The creative director explained that the Necron tease helps to sell the huge scope of Warhammer’s universe, showing how different factions span millenia.
“One of the great things about putting that [level] in there is it demonstrates the sheer age and scale of this universe,” they said. “You know, you could be having a huge battle on the surface of a world, and then you dig down underneath, and there’s something that’s been there for millions of years before human beings ever existed… I’m really glad that Dmitriy pushed for that, because I think it adds that extra dimension to it. But it wasn’t easy to get it.”
Fans want more Necron content
While it was extremely difficult to get the Necron tease in the ending of Space Marine 2, the developers are well aware that fans want more.
“People are disappointed that we don’t have Necrons,” said game director Dmitriy Grigorenko.
At the time of writing, there’s no concrete plans to add Necron enemies to the game. With a huge amount of effort needed to add another enemy faction, it seems unlikely that an entire new army will be added.
