Saber Interactive has created one of the best adaptations of the Warhammer 40,000 universe with Space Marine 2. However, the video game’s zealous adherence to the board game’s aesthetic is not only important to the title’s developers, but also to series creator Games Workshop.

In a new interview, Saber revealed that the iconic tabletop company was very stringent on the game’s 3D models, even making sure specific spots of armour were exactly how they should be.

Space Marine 2 devs fixed Titus’ ankles

With the game’s massive success possibly leading to story DLC or an eventual Space Marine 3, Saber Interactive has years of plans for the new Warhammer game.

Alongside infamously fighting to keep the game’s Necron tease, the Space Marine 2 devs had to make sure every 3D model was as accurate as possible to the tabletop game’s miniatures.

Speaking to IGN, Saber CCO Tim Willits revealed that Games Workshop took issue with the size of protagonist Titus’ ankle armour as it didn’t fully match the miniature designs.

“[It] was hard to make,” Willits explained. “I mean, when you walk and run and fight as Titus, it feels so good. The ankle armour we had was the wrong size, and they told us that the ankle armour was wrong.”

Tyranids must attack like Tyranids

Alongside the model accuracy, Games Workshop also made sure that every enemy behaved like its tabletop counterpart. As a realisation of the board game in video game form, the company made sure every enemy would only perform attacks it could outside of the video game.

“Even when we’re coming up with Tyranid attacks, they’re like, ‘Oh, that Tyranid doesn’t really attack like that’, or ‘That Chaos Marine, you can’t really have him do that’. So we had to adjust things. We did push them a little bit.”

These restrictions do mean that there are limitations on what Saber can do. For example, more robust Chaos customisation is impossible due to the license’s lore restrictions, but the team also has one of the biggest universes ever to play in.

At the end of the day, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is one of the best adaptations of the tabletop game in video game form. Everything feels as it should and looks as it should, and that’s perfect for fans and newcomers alike.
