Saber Interactive’s newly-released Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is a brilliant release on all platforms, but some players are bummed by its customisation. While there is a fair amount of customisation, some options are completely locked away so the game can stay as true to the Warhammer lore as possible.

“Lore restrictions” are in place for Space Marine 2

While some players have moaned about the state of the game’s Assault class, others have simply complained that they are unable to use the Chaos Space Marines across most classes. In fact, the army has very little customisation in the new game.

In a new Q&A, Saber Interactive revealed that they are restricted from adding the Chaos army into some classes due to existing Warhammer lore. Furthermore, it’s harder to match existing Chaos armour pieces to classes without clipping, especially when trying to keep the army’s silhouettes the same as other clans.

“There are many lore restrictions preventing us from doing this (For instance: We cannot make a sniper with a World Eater armor),” the developer said. “It is very tricky to match armor pieces for Chaos. Armor pieces have different sizes and styles, will clip through each other, etc. Also, in PvP it is important to be able to recognize an enemy’s class, and we want to keep the visual identity of each of them. Now, we will not keep it as it is and would like to expand Chaos customization, but the reality is they won’t be as modular as the Loyalist.”

Respect for the lore

As one of the deepest sci-fi universes around, it is incredibly important for Warhammer games to stay true to the decades of lore. While lore inconsistencies absolutely exist across many of the universe’s products, Space Marine 2 is very faithful and a true love letter to the franchise.

While it does mean that some armies will receive less love than others, the new release is a fantastic time for all fans of the series. As we said in our official review, the game “nails the aesthetic of a well-equipped, adaptable, and powerful super marine in service of the God Emperor”.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is available right now on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC.
