Sega and Sonic Team have dropped the first footage of gameplay from upcoming adventure Sonic Frontiers.

The companies uploaded the brief trailer yesterday, with everyone’s favourite super-speedy hedgehog pelting around lush green locales. We get a brief look at some robotic foes you’ll tussle with, and of course plenty of rings to snap up. There’s also perhaps a little hint of Death Stranding, thanks to a treadmill wheel that Sonic powers up & activates… something? It’s certainly intriguing in its briefness.

The reason it’s this short, say Sonic Team, is to reveal more of the game over the course of June. We can expect more reveals later this month, starting off with more information later today. The lucky scamps at IGN get first dibs, but we’ll hopefully be able to pour over the details once they’re out in the wild.

Sonic Frontiers was first briefly revealed, even before it got a name, during the hedgehog’s 30th anniversary last year. It would take until December to get its official title and announcement. However, by then Sonic Team also promised “high velocity open-zone freedom” in the gameplay. All eyes will be on the title to do well in what’s been something of a cultural renaissance for the blue blur of late, including the eyes of Sega themselves.

We’ll find out if it can do that when Sonic Frontiers arrives this Holiday season on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. For now, check out the first Sonic Frontiers gameplay in the teaser below.
