It appears as though the next Sonic the Hedgehog game, scheduled for 2022, might have a name in Sonic Frontiers.
The title was spotted by Gematsu, who report that Sega has filed multiple trademarks for the name on October 22. Not only did the company file this trademark in its native Japanese, but also for the English language too. Coincidentally enough, an anonymous tipster shared on Reddit just five days before October 22 that Sonic Frontiers would be the name, and they also claimed it would be an “open-world game with a similar style” to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
At the time of writing, Sega hasn’t commented on either of these rumours. The new Sonic game was first revealed at the end of a special broadcast to celebrate the Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary. The same broadcast would also confirm the existence of remaster Sonic Colours: Ultimate which arrived back in September.
We’ve had very little on the brand new Sonic game since then, however. The game’s producer Takashi Iizuka spoke to fansite Sonic Stadium saying he hoped the title would “lay the foundations” for a new generation of Sonic titles. He added “The development team has been spending their time to do something new and challenging.”
We have our fingers crossed that Sega will show more of Sonic 2022/Sonic Frontiers or whatever it happens to be named soon. The publisher has earmarked the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
