If somebody once told you an enterprising gamer has created a fan-game based on popular ogre Shrek, you might call us not the sharpest tool in the shed.
But that’s exactly what indie developer Fat Dino has made in this impressive looking fan project made in Unreal Engine 4. Furthermore, he’s taken gameplay inspiration from what most would consider an unlikely source for a game based around the green ogre – with elements from the Diablo series. They include a UI that clearly takes a cue from the RPG, with the health and mana orbs on either side (flanked in this case by effigies of the Dragon and her husband, Donkey.)
In the twenty minute video, Dino talks through their creation – even including footage of how Shrek can take down hordes of the gingerbread man using a cyclone attack lifted straight from Diablo – only with a much lower, third-person camera view more often seen in traditional action adventure games. Of course, plenty of other fan favourite characters show up throughout, including Puss in Boots.
While this of course isn’t going to be commercially available any time soon, it’s an impressive feat to watch, and if you think your PC can handle it – Dino has made their project – cheekily named Unnamed Ogre Simulator – available to download via their itch.io page, for at least as long until it gets potentially taken down by the big green ogre’s copyright layers lawyers. So check it out while you can.
