Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has said that the upcoming Shenmue III will feature an open ending, potentially leaving the door open for another chapter in the revenge-driven saga down the line.

Speaking during an interview with Gamersflag (via resetera) Suzuki-san revealed that it’s not possible to conclude the cult franchise with the upcoming third instalment in the series, which is arriving almost 20 years after the original game.

‘Yes, the end will be open for a sequel. It will not be possible to finish with this third episode,’ said the Ys Net boss. Whether or not Shenmue IV gets made is another question entirely, although it’s clear that Suzuki has no plans to end the series just yet.

Shenmue III is currently in development for PC and PS4 and will launch at some point in 2018. The sequel recently received a fresh batch of screenshots, which continues the trend of dead-eyed characters we’ve seen from the game since last summer.
