In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the YSNet founder, Yu Suzuki, has revealed the first teaser trailer for Shenmue III on the PS4. After two years in development, the first look at gameplay has had people cooing over the environments and groaning about the characters. But didn’t Yu Suzuki say he was going for that ‘feeling of nostalgia’? Maybe the characters models looking a bit last-gen is part of that.

In the blog post, Suzuki said that, ‘As you will see, the latest chapter in Ryo and Shenhua’s journey begins with a beautiful set piece in China. You’ll also see that we’re aiming to significantly upgrade the game’s visuals, and you may also notice a new character during that quick glimpse of our new battle gameplay…’

So let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room: the characters are a little, well lifeless. Granted the game is ‘in-development’, but still. On a positive note, the environments look absolutely lovely and really evoke that nostalgic feel. The short piece of gameplay we saw introduces some of the friends and foes players will come across, a brief look at some of the combat in action and an idea of the environments players will be able to explore as Ryo Hazuki.

This reveal follows on from last week’s news that Deep Silver would be taking on the global publishing duties for Shenmue III

While I readily agree that the game isn’t going to win any awards for character design, it’s great to see that there is actually something being created, and hopefully there’ll be plenty of time to polish the particularly rough parts of the game before its full release. The game may no longer be dead, but right now Ryo and the gang seem to look a few days past their last pulse.
