Developer Ys Net has announced that Shenmue III has ended its crowdfunding campaign with an impressive $7.1 million raised.

The Kickstarter for Yu Suzuki's revenge epic raised approximately $7,179,510 from a total of 81,087 backers. It's an impressive amount for sure, although it's worth remembering that the original Shenmue was at the time the most expensive video game ever made at around $70 million.

A few months ago Ys Net confirmed that the action-RPG sequel reached $7 million, expanding the battle system and other features.

'Quite an impressive score, isn't it!?,' said the studio in an email to Shenmue III backers. 'Seeing the final numbers, all of us here can't help but feel all over again the immensity of the support everyone has given to make this project come true! Thank you!'

Shenmue III was announced at E3 2015 during Sony's presser, where creator Yu Suzuki shocked the audience by rocking up on stage and counting down the launch to the Kickstarter campaign.

The crowdfunding got off to an incredibly solid start, becoming the fastest video game on Kickstarter to hit the one million mark. The initial campaign closed with $6.3 million, although a Slacker Backer effort kept the money coming.

Shenmue III is due for release for PC and PlayStation 4 on August 27, 2019.
