Resident Evil 2 director Kazunori Kadoi has revealed that the development team plucked inspiration from Aliens' Newt when creating Sherry Birkin, the 12-year-old girl who befriends Claire Redfield in the survival horror title.

While Sherry played a major role in 1998's Resi 2 (I won't spoil anything in case you're a newcomer), she didn't really see much development in terms of character.

With the upcoming remake however, Kadoi-san says Capcom wanted to give her more depth, and her initial encounter with Claire has changed dramatically. In fact, it recalls the scene when Ripley met Newt in James Cameron's acclaimed sci-fi epic.

'Taking Sherry as an example, she's a character who in the original game was basically a little girl and very childish,' Kadoi told Eurogamer.

'We wanted to add depth to her. Because you're looking at her in a more photorealistic environment, and the characters look more human and realistic, that naturally means we have to add more depth to them, because they're a lot less cartoonish and two dimensional. Back in the day, the storytelling was revolutionary because horror games didn't have stories. We have to meet fan expectations now with games designed for 2019.'

'Newt from Aliens was something of a reference point,' he added, 'the first time you meet her and seeing, yeah, she's seen some serious stuff!'

You can check out Claire's encounter with Sherry in the latest Resident Evil 2 footage, where she also tangles with the lumbering first mutation of G.

Resident Evil 2 is due for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on January 25, 2019. Fancy splashing out? Then have a gander at the UK Collector's Edition. It's lovely.
