Rayman Origins is now a full retail release platformer with four-player co-op and various platforming styles.

The information comes from the pages of Game Informer magazine (Via NeoGAF).

Ubisoft’s Michel Ancel told Game Informer that the new platformer will be more accessible, while still offering a challenge, and that it will include numerous platforming styles.

New ‘I Dare You’ challenges let you place wagers on whether you can complete complex acrobatic chains, and levels have been designed to support up to four players in co-op.

Rayman Origins was originally announced as an episodic release, with the first part due Christmas 2010. It’s now set for a holiday release on Xbox 360 and PS3.

2D platformers have had something of a comeback in recent years due to the rise in popularity of Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN, but full retail releases in the genre have almost completely dried up on next-gen platforms – we can only think of LittleBigPlanet. They are more common on the Wii, but Origins is currently only set for Xbox 360 and PS3.
