It’s already been said many times that last year was one of the most memorable in video games with the success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds proving to be one of 2017’s most surprising stories. Over December 29 the popularity of the battle royale title didn’t waver as the game pulled in over three million concurrent players on Steam.

Creative director Brendan Greene highlighted the milestone on Twitter, while thanking everyone in the process with a lovely ‘GG WP everybody.’ The game peaked at 3,106,358 players, dwarfing the second most played game on the day, Dota 2, which pulled in 704k users.

It’s no surprise, really, as the game’s player base has been rising for months now, and it had sold seven million copies back as far as last August. The game launched on Xbox One in mid-December, and while many players have spoken out about issues they’ve had with the console version, the studio looks keen to support it as much as the PC version, which came out of Steam Early Access on December 21.

It’ll be interesting to see how the battle royale landscape changes, or if it changes, over the course of the next 12 months. Fortnite’s pivot to the hot new genre that has all the kids talking has been fruitful for the studio, and there’s plenty of other games that are getting in on the action like Dying Light. But whatever about other titles, the PUBG train isn’t slowing down just yet.
