August is a very exciting month for PlayStation fans. There will be the release of Gears of War the same day Helldivers 2 joins Xbox, and there will also be the release of the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. While these are exciting releases to anticipate, first we will be treated to some new Essential additions for PS Plus. Here you will find the PS Plus August 2025 free monthly games reveal date along with a new game confirmed and 14 games leaving, including a huge GOTY winner.
PS Plus August 2025 free monthly games reveal date
The reveal date for the PS Plus August 2025 Essential free monthly games is July 30th. Sony typically reveals the upcoming selection on Wednesday, the week before the release date. Sony’s PlayStation Blog post for July confirms that the games will come out on August 5th.
As for Extra and Premium, they will be revealed on August 13th with the release date already confirmed for August 19th.
Before August 4th arrives, make sure to grab the current Essential selection. They include Diablo 4, the relaxing Justant, and The King of Fighters XV.
PS Plus Augus 2025 new game confirmed
The only game confirmed for PS Plus in August 2025 is Sword of the Sea. It will join the Extra tier on August 19th, as confirmed in Sony’s recap of the State of Play that occurred in June.
For those unaware, Sword of the Sea is by Giant Squid. They are the developer responsible for the whimsically beautiful and visually stunning experiences of Abzu and The Pathless.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment president, Shuhei Yoshida, said Sword of the Sea was his “favorite” game at Summer Game Fest 2025. This is very exciting as the former PlayStation president previously teased Blue Prince as a GOTY contender, and he was definitely right as it’s currently the second highest-rated new release of 2025 so far on Metacritic, just slightly behind Clair Obscur Expedition 33.
Games leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium
Below are all the games set to leave Premium and Extra on August 19th:
- Bugsnax (Extra)
- EA Sports UFC 5 (Extra)
- Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker (Extra)
- RIDE 5 (Extra)
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (Extra)
- Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris (Extra)
- Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (Extra)
- Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization (Extra)
- Sword Art Online: Last Recollection (Extra)
- Sword Art Online: Lost Long (Premium)
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Extra)
- Top Spin 2K25 (Extra)
- Vacation Simulator (Premium)
- Wild Hearts (Extra)
There are a bunch of fantastic games listed above, but the most notable is easily The Witcher 3. This is an absolute masterpiece that won GOTY at the Game Awards back in 2015, and it’s sad to see it leave. Only compensation is that at least CD Projekt RED added Cyberpunk 2077 to Extra earlier in July.
It’s not only The Witcher 3 that is an unfortunate departure. Star Wars Jedi Survivor is fantastic, and Bugsnax has a lot of charm. RIDE 5 is also incredible for motorbike enthusiasts, and there’s a massive hole incoming for fans of the Sword Art Online series.
