Announced last week, Project Rap Rabbit is the new project from the creators of PaRappa the Rapper and Gitaroo Man. Today it was revealed that the studio behind the game has taken to Kickstarter to fund development.

On the PlayStation Blog Co-Producer Keiichi Yano described his new game as ‘rhythm-action 2.0’, saying it is an evolution of the music genre. The story sounds like the exact thing you’d expect from a game called Project Rap Rabbit, too.

‘Our adventure is the story of rapping rabbit Toto-Maru and his sidekick Otama-Maru as they travel through a world recovering from a great catastrophe. By fighting the leaders of neighbouring factions via the medium of rap battles, our heroes can bring about peace to their troubled lands.’

The concept of PRR sounds very similar to games like PaRappa, as players will be expected to beat-match their rhymes with the song. However, it appears you’ll be able to choose Toto-maru’s upcoming phrase mid-track, via a list of options. ‘It’s a system that draws inspiration from the dialogue wheels of Mass Effect and Fallout 4, as well as the classic call-and-response gameplay established two decades ago in PaRappa The Rapper.’

Platforms currently being looked at are PS4 and PC, but that’s dependant on them raising £855,000 through crowd-funding on Kickstarter. Given the poor response to the PaRappa the Rapper remaster, it’ll be interesting to see whether the general public part ways with their cash on this.
