What we knew as Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 3 might actually be titled, ‘Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’, as reported by PCGamesN

A third installment to the rooty-shooty franchise has been alive and kicking for almost a year now, and we guessed it would be called ‘Garden Warfare 3’, given that a PvZ comic listed itself as ‘the official comic book bridge between video games PvZ: GW2 and PvZ: GW3.

Alpha playtesting for the latest title began two weeks ago, under the codename ‘Picnic’, so the game is definitely on track for its third quarter launch this year. But, according to leaks from EA itself, it seems now that the sequel is marching to the beat of a different drum.

EA has recently filed for a trademark under the title ‘Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’ in Europe. This is oh-so-coincidentally just ahead of Gamescom next week, where it will also lift the curtain on other upcoming games. Furthermore, a temporary website launched a few weeks ago and was replaced with a comical placeholder. Its URL still contains the words ‘Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’, though.

While the website was active, sharped-eyed fans snapped a capture and uploaded it to Reddit.  ‘Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville’ is defined as a shooter, which is very decidedly not a tower defence game. The third entry will also possess, ‘20 fully customizable character classes, one social region, three free-roam regions, nine PvP modes including 4v4 Battle Arena and more!’

It’s possible that the different genre and features like the ‘free-roam areas’ justified a new title for the game, and so ‘Garden Warfare’ was left in the dust. Additionally, there is another Modern Warfare launching this year and maybe for that reason, EA chose to change it up. In any event, we’ll stand by for an official update. With Gamescom around the corner, perhaps we won’t have to wait too long.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is out on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4.
