EA secretly sent out alpha playtest invites over the weekend for a new Plants vs Zombies shooter codenamed ‘Picnic’. Given that a recent PvZ comic defined itself as ‘the official comic book bridge between video games PvZ: GW2 and PvZ: GW3’, and that in February EA announced to investors that an entirely new Plants vs Zombies was scheduled for a March 2020 release, it’s likely that this will be the third game in the series. They tried their best to be subtle, but invitees did upload screenshots of the confidential text onto Reddit sharpish.

There isn’t any information about what the alpha will show or what’s new to the Plants vs Zombies universe. The invites simply read: ‘You are invited to participate in the new PvZ shooter (codename Picnic) playtest on Xbox One or PS4. Made by the team that created PvZ Garden Warfare, the Picnic Closed Alpha will give players a first glimpse into the new game – you don't want to miss out!’

The playtests are running from August 1 to August 2, and on August 3 to August 6th. The first run will be from 11am and 3pm Pacific (7pm and 11pm GMT) on each day. The second run begins 11am Pacific (7pm GMT) August 3rd to 11am Pacific (7pm GMT) August 6th. PvZ Garden Warfare came out three years ago, so the time is ripe for another game. If you’ve not tried it out yet, it’s available for free on the EA Access.
