Codemasters has announced that its Neon Engine, used in this year’s impressive Colin McRae: DiRT for Xbox 360, PC and PS3, has been renamed EGO. The EGO Game Technology Engine from Codemasters (to give it its full name) has been in development for three years and is being used to develop highly anticipated titles Race Driver: GRID and Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising.

It seems that the EGO Engine is the reason we’re going to be getting Operation Flashpoint 2 on next-gen consoles at the same time as PC.

“Particularly for Operation Flashpoint 2, we simply could not fulfil the ambitions we have for the game with any off-the-shelf middleware; certainly not one that enabled us to develop across the major fifth generation consoles simultaneously with PC, rather than as an afterthought, and no one was doing that,” stated Bryan Marshall, Chief Technology Officer, Codemasters Studios.

Given how impressive DiRT looks, EGO certainly looks like a wise move by the UK-based publisher.
