Kinect Sports Rivals will let players earn coins – a form of in-game currency used to purchase additional outfits for their champion – by completing challenges and competing in each sport. But does that mean the studio has plans to let players purchase additional coins via microtransactions?

“Not at the moment,” executive producer Danny Isaac said in an interview with VideoGamer.com. “What we’re looking to do is drive more engagement. So we’ll have some of the ideas of challenges. We have this thing called Rivals League [where] you earn fans and move up and it’s this hierarchical league. We want people to engage in those pieces and by doing that they’ll get more coins.”

On top of completing challenges, players will also be able to “grind” coins by playing each of the main sports normally, “but it’s going to take longer,” Isaac warns. “If you engage in other areas of the product, then you’ll be able to get those items easier.”

As for the future, Rare also gave us an insight into its DLC plans for the game, revealing that most of Kinect Sports Rivals’ premium content will come in the form of additional outfits.

“Most of our paid stuff will be more outfits and things, just cool stuff people can wear,” he continued. “Really we’re looking at updates, just to update the product first and foremost and see how it goes.”

However, Isaac goes on to admit that there may be some superfluous add-on content developed just because “people will buy it”.

“I really want to see how people play, how they engage,” he continued. “We want to be careful that we’re not just kind of like, ‘Hey, just make stuff because we think people will buy it’. There’ll be some stuff like that, but I’m really more interested in getting the engagement up.”

Kinect Sports Rivals launches exclusively on Xbox One on April 11.
