Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. This is especially important in modes like Be-A-Pro, where shots on goal can create rebound opportunities for your teammates to put one in the back of the net. Even in competitive modes, throwing the puck on the net more often increases the chances for good things to happen.

However, if you’re going to take shots, they might as well be good ones. You could be the best defensive player the game has ever seen, but you’re not winning any games if you are not scoring goals.

The easiest way to increase your goals per game is by learning to take better shots in NHL 23. So why don’t we cover a few of the basics?

Let’s jump right to it.

Here’s how to shoot in NHL 23:

  1. Aiming: Use the left analog stick on both Playstation and Xbox to aim your shot.
  2. Slap Shot: A slap shot is pulled back on the right analog stick and then pushed forward. If you want to cancel your shot or fake the shot, release the stick without pushing it forwards.
  3. Wrist Shot: For a wrist shot, set your player up to be on their forehand side. Push the right stick to the left and your player will start their glide which improves accuracy – this is optional. Then rotate the stick back to an angle, not straight down like a slap shot. Then push the stick forwards.

Be sure to experiment with cutting across the goal to freeze the goalie, setting up your players in different positions to use their forehand or backhand, and shooting for rebounds.

Keep in mind, slap shots take a lot more time to get the shot away in NHL 23 but you do generate more power. So it’s important to consider your situation on the ice and how close defenders are before deciding what type of shot to take.

You can practice the different shots and see how players perform different shot types in the ‘Free Skate’ mode. Should you be new to NHL 23, we recommend you try out these various shooting methods with some of the best wings in the game first in order to get acquainted.

The wrist shot in particular is a difficult technique to pull off. But if you can pull it off, wrist shots can be a great way to score some more goals.
