Crash Team Rumble developer Toys for Bob has now revealed Catbat, the new Crash Bandicoot character, and their story is essentially similar to Rocket’s from Guardians of the Galaxy. Based on the lore provided by the development team, the half-cat, half-bat’s tragic inception is identical to that of the brilliant, diminutive raccoon’s as they were both brought to life by a sinister experiment from a malicious, narcissistic scientist.

Based on a comic provided by the developer, Catbat was a constant subject of Neo Cortex’s inhumane tests until they were finally able to escape from the antagonist’s lab. Broken and battered, Catbat then started roaming random city streets until they happened upon a familiar looking rock star that gave them the kindness they deserved.

Now, even though Catbat’s beginnings are similar to Rocket’s, the flying feline doesn’t exactly have a deadly arsenal at their disposal that they can use to blast opponents away. However, they’re still iconic in their own right for a number of different reasons. In addition to being the first ever non-binary figure featured in the series, their rock star persona was also apparently inspired by a legendary artist that’s known the world over in David Bowie.

Catbat can also use their flight ability to dominate both land and air that’ll surely give any team they’re on a huge advantage. Based on the additional comic that the developer provided, they may even be able to summon forth a flock of bats that’ll temporarily deter the enemy squad from acquiring the all-important Wumpa Fruit that’s scattered around each in-game arena.

With the Crash Team Rumble release date steadily approaching, fans of the marsupial-led platforming series should soon be able to try out Catbat along with the rest of the roster once it drops.
