Nintendo has finally released a new patch for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While not a major content drop – which we’d all love at this point – the new update makes the game more compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
The vast majority of OG Switch games should run just fine on the new Switch 2, but there are a number of titles that are incompatible with the new hardware. New Horizons was not one of the incompatible games, but it appears that the title had issues playing multiplayer with gamers across both systems.
New Animal Crossing: New Horizons patch notes
As explained in the game’s recent 2.0.7 update patch notes, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been updated to ensure better compatibility between OG Switch and Switch 2 gamers.
Nintendo has not revealed what the exact issues were between the two machines. However, this could mean that there may be some funky behaviour between other games running across both systems.
“Improved the compatibility for multiplayer sessions between Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch,” the patch notes read.
Animal Crossing: New Horizon’s update is particularly surprising as Nintendo isn’t releasing a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 update for the game. While titles like Super Mario Odyssey and even ARMS are receiving resolution and frame rate boosts for the new machine, the cosy life simulator is not receiving any update.
Additionally, New Horizons isn’t the only title that’s been updated specifically for multiplayer compatibility. As it turns out, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also received an update to improve multiplayer functionality between Switch and Switch 2 hardware.
Hopefully, the vast majority of multiplayer games that are backward compatible on Nintendo Switch 2 won’t have issues during multiplayer. With thousands of third-party games on the original handheld, there’s a lot of space for error.
Additionally, we hope that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive some kind of extra Switch 2 support, whether that’s through spruced-up visuals or some kind of content update. A new game in the series is most certainly in development, but it feels like such a shame to abandon the series’ most popular entry ever.
