While this weekend’s reveal of the return of time guardian Geras to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster had fans excited, he may have been upstaged by the reveal of one of the game’s best fatalities yet.

Many members of the game’s subreddit are loving the latest addition to the Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities list shown off towards the end of Geras reveal trailer, in what may be the series’ most elaborate death scenes. Here’s your final warning before we go into spoiler territory, in case you’re wanting to go in blind. Basically, Fire God Liu Kang lifts the opponent off the ground and transports them into outer space before summing an actual Black Hole to vacuum the opponent to a bloody mess. Of course, it’s not a slow process either, as the unfortunate victim has their skin and muscles torn away by the collapsing star until only the skeleton remains.

The reaction to the new fatality has been almost universal praise so far. “Sickest fatality ever, that was amazing!” says Captain_Crusty. “A Black Hole fatality is something I thought I’d NEVER see!” adds Hellion998. And the popularity of the new fatality is evident just from the views the trailer has had over the weekend, with more than 2.7 million views in just over two days. As others on the subreddit have pointed out, that’s almost as many views as the recent Lin Kuei trailer that’s been out three weeks and showcased longtime fan favourite characters Sub Zero, Scorpion and Smoke.

Of course, there are many folks who are hyped to see Geras make their surprise return too, especially as the character having only recently debuted in the previous game. “I’m unironically really happy we get Geras,” says LoneWolf2099, “He was one of the best newcomers NRS has made and there’s a lot more potential for him than we got in (MK)11.” On a similar note, The-Power-Stone adds “Say what you want about the NRS era original characters, but I’ve always found Geras to be an all-around really cool character with a unique and fun move set. I’m glad he’s back. This roster looking to be one of the best in recent memory.”

It certainly sounds like Geras will be a popular choice when the Mortal Kombat 1 release date arrives on September 19 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Before then, we’re expecting plenty more reveals – but before then there’ll be a Mortal Kombat 1 pre order beta start date for those who’ve already splashed out for the game in a couple of weeks’ time.
