The co-creator of Mortal Kombat has been leaning into recent rumours of some horror icons who could be potential DLC characters in the recently released Mortal Kombat 1.

We’re now a few weeks in and players like ourselves have gotten stuck into the game (check out our Mortal Kombat 1 review here) and despite the fact the game’s first set of additions to the Mortal Kombat 1 character list is already known, there’s been a few cheeky references pointing to the possibility of some other iconic characters making a guest appearance. Ed Boon – the game’s co-creator – has now thrown further fuel onto the fire by posting some artwork of a collection of horror icons that’s been marked with ticks and question marks and captioned it with a question mark and dragon symbol.

Those who are familiar with Mortal Kombat’s history will no doubt recognise the significance of the marks, as those who are ticked are characters that have already appeared in recent iterations of Mortal Kombat. Freddy Kruger guested as a DLC fighter in 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9, while Jason and Leatherface both appeared as downloadable characters in Mortal Kombat X. Those with crosses who are yet to appear in a Mortal Kombat game, just incase you’re curious are – from left to right – Michael Myers, Pinhead (from Hellraiser) Chucky (from Child’s Play) and Billy the Puppet (from Saw.).

While it’s unlikely that all these figures will make it into the bloody fighter – for a start Chucky and Billy the Puppet are technically toys and they’d probably have a huge height discrepancy – it’s interesting that Ghostface is in this list, as dataminers claim to have found references to the Scream baddie in the game’s files. They’ve also claimed to have found references to Jade, Kotal Kahn and Noob Saibot – three characters who did not appear in the game nor have yet been confirmed for the beat-em-up’s first Kombat Pack 1. Boon has had a long history of playfully teasing fans though, so still take this latest tease with a huge pinch of salt.

While there’s no date for the known characters arrival yet, the Mortal Kombat 1’s first set of DLC fighters – Kombat Pack 1 – will comprise of Homelander, Peacemaker, Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Takeda and Ermac. We’ll keep our ear to the ground and let you know if any further characters are announced.
