With FPS fans focused on the recent resurgence of classic Call of Duty servers, a cult favourite’s rise has seemingly flown under the radar. While most players remember playing classic FPS titles on the Xbox 360 like Halo 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare, the FASA Studio-developed shooter Shadowrun still holds an impressively dedicated player base over 16 years after its initial release.

While Shadowrun’s peer-to-peer servers never truly went offline, some dedicated fans of the series noticed that the recent revival of old Call of Duty servers seemed to have a negative impact on the game’s matchmaking service knocking them offline. User wwm0key and a few others noticed this issue and reached out to Microsoft to see if the servers could be salvaged.

To many players’ surprise, Microsoft not only fixed the issue but wwm0nkey also noted that the servers “actually kinda works better than it has ever worked in the history of the game being up”. Before the fix, matches used to take over 30 seconds to be found but after the revival of the game’s servers, wwm0nkey noted that this now takes around three seconds.

While Shadowrun’s numbers are nowhere near the player count of old Call of Duty games, the game’s dedicated Discord server hosts nearly 2,000 players. There’s clearly still a load of love for this cult classic with one player saying, “Shadowrun walked so Overwatch could run. One of my favourite multiplayer games and having a new one even closer to Shadowrun’s lore would be amazing to play”.

The recent conversation surrounding the game has even prompted some fans to call for a reboot of the series with many looking to Arkane as prime candidates to lead the project. One player said, “Arkane would be a literally perfect studio for a Shadowrun game. They got the stylized art down- they got the immersive sim aspects- it could be a great game”. In other gaming news, Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 servers are back online, so you can play the best COD games again and Destiny 2 players call on Bungie to “stop loading people into missions when they start the game”.
