Metroid Prime: Federation Force will arrive in Europe on September 2 exclusively on Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has announced.

The European release follows two weeks after its North American debut, where it launches on August 19. A Japan launch follows one week later on August 25.

Federation Force is a first-person, multiplayer-focussed spin-off that puts players in the boots of a Marine fighting through various enemy bases. It has been criticised by fans of the series, however, for its move away from the franchise’s traditional gameplay, and focus on fast-paced action.

“The reaction has been negative,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted last year. “There’s no sugar coating it. This is an example where fans who aren’t able to get their hands on the game may be at a bit of a competitive disadvantage. Everyone who has played what we are showing regarding Metroid Prime, they’ve come across really pleased. My ask is that fans trust us.”

Nintendo has yet to announce a new Metroid game for home consoles, with the most recent core game in the series, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, launching on Wii back in 2007.
