Konami has announced that it will be temporarily removing Metal Gear Solid 2 & Metal Gear Solid 3 from digital storefronts from today.

As per the announcement, the reason for the removal is so the developer can renew the licenses for “select historical archive footage” used in the game. Konami calls the move a temporary decision, so presumably they’ll be back soon. However, the company hasn’t given an ETA on when the removed Metal Gear Solid games will return.

The games in question are as follows:

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition for PlayStation 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD Edition for PlayStation 3
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Edition for PlayStation 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition for PlayStation Vita
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD Edition for PlayStation Vita
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PlayStation Vita
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PlayStation Now
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Edition: 2&3 for Xbox 360
  • Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D for Nintendo 3DS
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance on GOG.com
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 HD for Shield TV via NVidia Shield
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 HD for Shield TV via NVidia Shield

Back in October, it was rumoured that Chinese developer Virtuos Studios is working on a remake of MGS 3 for Konami. We’ve had no confirmation on that rumour yet, but Josh has offered up some of his ideas on what such a remake could improve.
