2K and Firaxis Games have shown off the first gameplay of tactical action RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns following the game’s reveal last week.

The story was covered in the game’s official reveal, so check back there for a recap. Combat, then, appears to be a turn based affair. Battles will see you take three heroes into combat, each with their own abilities and powers represented by cards. These cards can be arranged and customised to suit your playstyle, while your positioning on the battlefield lets you use your environment for a tactical advantage. Getting the most out of both will be crucial to your success in any given mission.

Between missions, you’ll explore The Abbey. Rather than just a menu screen, it’ll be a fully third person explorable hub. As the Hunter, you’ll interact with fellow heroes like Blade, Captain Marvel and Iron Man and develop your relationships with them. This can be done not just through dialogue, but also hangouts, gift giving and more. Doing so will help to unlock new cards and thus new abilities you can take onto the battlefield.

Creative Director at Firaxis Jake Solomon says of the gameplay: “In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, you aren’t learning how to fight or gradually grow stronger – you and your fellow heroes are already legends, and must combine everything in your arsenal to stop Lilith. Cards provide a new and refreshing way to approach tactics, allowing us to really go all-out in designing a combat system that makes every hero feel, look, and play differently.”

Following this initial reveal, Firaxis Games are also promising a further look at gameplay in another livestream. That’ll take place at 7:30pm UK time on Tuesday September 7 on the game’s official website.
